  • Footnote: The Birmingham firms of Jennens & Bettridge and McCallum & Hodson are both known for their production of larger scale papier-mache furniture in the mid 19th century. For a related bedroom suite attributed to one of the two firms see C.Gilbert ‘Furniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall’ items 515-518, vol 2, 1978, p.389-391. Related shaped shell back papier mache chairs are illustrated in E.Aslin 19th Century English Furniture’ London, 1962, pl. 45&46. A pair of papier-mache sofas and a writing table stamped by Jennens and Bettridge and supposedly supplied to the Spanish Royal Family were sold Phillips, London, 26 November 1996, lot 227 and 228.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
