Samuel Ryder's Robert Forgan mallet shaped putter circa 1910s
Stamped to crown 'SR', still with Ryder's original white aiming line, original rubber grip, and with a signed letter showing that this putter was given indirectly by Joan Scarfe Ryder, youngest daughter of Samuel Ryder, to her godson, the present owner.

Footnotes

  • Peter Fry in his book Samuel Ryder-The Man Behind The Ryder Cup. published in 2000 describes the putter at Verulam as a Forgan, 'Not surprisingly, the Verulam Club retains some very interesting reminders of its golden era...memorabilia includes three hickory golf clubs belonging to Abe Mitchell, Samuel Ryder's own Forgan putter in a plain wooden cabinet...'
In fact when the putter was removed from the case in 2001 although it resembled a Forgan, it was clearly stamped as having been made by George Brews who was the club maker at Royal Blackheath 1890 to 1902.
Samuel Ryder was regarded as being 'frequently a deadly putter'.

Provenance: Stuart Ogilvie, the present owner's uncle and Samuel Ryder regularly attended The Trinity United Reformed Church in St. Albans. In 1962 when Simon Jackman was born, Joan Ryder agreed to be his Godmother. Joan then gave her father's Forgan putter to Stuart Ogilvie and this was in turn passed to Simon Jackman in 1998.
