Footnotes

  • Provenance: The Brand-Lochryn Professional Golf Tournament was first held at the North Manchester Golf Club in 1946 and was sponsored by Brand Paper to the tune of £1,500 (1st prize was £500). The first winner was Arthur D’Arcy ‘Bobby’ Locke who was born in 1917 in Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa. He played his first professional round in Britain in 1938. With the outbreak of war he joined the South African Airforce becoming a bomber pilot and served in Italy and the Middle East. Upon returning to his chosen career in golf in 1946 he began by winning the Lochryn Cup Golf Tournament. Locke went on to win the Open Championship at Sandwich in 1949, which he then successfully defended the following year at Troon. He beat Peter Thomson to win it again at Royal Lytham in 1952 and then became a four-time Open Champion in 1957 when he won at St Andrews at the age of 40. Three years later he was involved in a serious road accident, which kept him in hospital for several months. He returned to the golfing scene after 18 months to play alongside the seniors. His career as a professional golfer had spanned almost 30 years and saw him win more that 104 titles, including 25 major Championships.
The Lochryn Cup stayed in South Africa until Christie’s auctioned it and the rest of the Bobby Locke Collection on 9th July 1993. Lot 44 was The Lochryn Cup and it sold for £2,530.00. The Marketing Director of Brand Paper purchased it for the Company and in 1994 re-instigated a golf tournament involving the Brand Paper’s customers held fittingly at the North Manchester Golf Club. Brand Paper was subsequently merged with Caxton paper to form Papyrus GB Ltd and it continued the tradition of playing annually for the Lochryn Cup. In 2002, Papyrus GB closed and the trophy and its replica were once again auctioned at Christie’s. They realised £3,525.00 and the proceeds went to the Great Ormond Street Hospital appeal.
