A fine Venetian enamelled and gilt tazza
circa 1500
The wide shallow tray with raised rim, painted with a central medallion of a girl seated on the back of a floating stylised water monster, against a grassy landscape, within two bands of beaded dots with traces of gilding, with two bands of moulded concentric ribs on the underside edged in gilding, above a low spreading foot with folded gilt-edged rim, 28.5cm diameter (two short stress cracks)

  • A late 15th century goblet with centaurs painted in a similar manner and with the same colour palette, in the Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, is illustrated by Robert Charleston and Michael Archer Glass and Enamels (1977), pp.87-90.

    The subject of the medallion on the present lot is reminiscent of those figures on the Venetian lattimo glass jug of the same period, in the Toledo Museum of Art. The marine theme on both the jug and our tazza is characteristic of a period that saw a renewed interest in depicting the pagan sea gods of antiquity. In a city which was dependent on marine travel for commercial and political success, it was appropriate that the imagery on these pieces included references to the sea gods, representing as they do untamed nature which could either cause disastrous floods or ensure a safe and speedy journey (see Jutta-Annette Page, The Art of Glass (2006), pp.83-85)

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
