The conical bowl diamond-engraved with a crowned three-quarter profile bust of the Queen wearing a low-cut bodice decorated with flowers, the reverse with a calligraphic inscription Maria Regina, set on a hollow quatrelobed knop between collars, over a wide folded conical foot engraved with two floral sprigs, 14.7cm high

  • Provenance: With Kunsthandel Mozes Mogrobi, until 1942 or 1943, when Mogrobi was forced to sell this item to Kunstsammlungen der Stadt Düsseldorf; recuperation to the Nederlands Kunstbezit-collectie after the Second World War (NK-collectie, Inv.No. NK 464); Groninger Museum, Groningen, from 1953 (Inv.no.1953/87) until restitution to a descendant of the original owner in 2007. Recorded by Smit (1994), p.62, 149.29. A goblet with an almost identical portrait of the Queen and the same inscription bearing within it the date 1695, is illustrated by Sheppard & Smith (1990), pp.24-25, no.9. Queen Mary II (of England) was joint ruler with her husband, William III of Orange, from 1688 to 1694 (or 1695). According to the Julian calendar she died at Kensington Palace in 1694 on 28 December, but on 7 January 1695 in the Gregorian
