circa 1890.
From the Woodall Workshop, the compressed ovoid form of ivory glass encased in clear glass and carved overall with foliage, further overlaid in translucent ruby and carved with formal lotus blossom and foliate sprays, the base with stiff-leaf band, the rim of the neck and the narrow foot with chevron border, 27.5cm high

  • For the shape see Grover (1980), p.19, fig.C1, signed by George Woodall. A very similar vase with Chinese-style decoration was sold at Sotheby's, 15 July 2004, lot 181. The present lot appears to have been based on an Islamic form and combines Near Eastern motifs. However, the colours and technique are based on Chinese cameo glass, a style which provided the inspiration for a number of pieces carved by the Woodall team, several in direct imitation - see Perry (2000), p.56

27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
