The oval, shell-shaped dish raised on a bed of strawberry leaves and fruit picked out in colours, the spreading shell-like base left in the white, the interior painted with a large moth resting on a botanical plant specimen, tiny sprigs and insects scattered around, 12.5cm long, incised triangle mark (some losses to the rim and associated fine cracks from the rim, minor losses to strawberry leaves)

  • Provenance: from the James McG Stewart Collection, sold at Sotheby's 13 November 1973, lot 83. Dishes of this type may have been used to serve tiny, semi-wild strawberries. Alternatively they may have been intended as larger table salts. An example without the applied strawberries and leaves is illustrated by F Severne Mackenna, The Triangle and Raised Anchor Wares, pl 7, fig 17 alongside another with applied detail similar to that found on the present lot at fig 18. 27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
