An Apulian red-figure volute krater
Circa 320 B.C.
The decoration enlivened with added white and ochre details, side (a) showing on the right a standing nude male figure with a himation over his shoulder and arm, holding a thyrsus in his left hand, a phiale in his right, Eros seated on a dotted groundline above, his hair in a kekryphalos with his wings outstretched, holding a phiale in his left hand, a beaded wreath in his right, a draped female figure seated on a white painted Ionic capital on the left, her hair bound in a kekryphalos with radiate stephane, holding a fan in her right hand, a wreath in her left, the neck decorated with a profile head of Nike in white, rising from her outstretched wings, hair dressed in a kekryphalos, a band of rosettes above, laurel beneath the rim, and ovolo above, side (b) showing two confronted male figures draped in himations with fillets in their hair, the figure on the left holding a staff, two diptychs and a rosette in the field, the neck decorated with palmettes, a band of laurel with a central rosette above, scrolling on the rim and baseline, strokes at the shoulder, palmettes under the tall strap handles, flanked by arching swans heads and surmounted by volutes with white and yellow mascaroons on side a, and white and black mascaroons on side b, 25¼in (64cm) high, repaired with some restoration
