An Attic black-figure fragmentary neck amphora
Attributed to the workshop of the Antimenes Painter, circa 530-510 B.C.
Enlivened with added white and crimson slip, the fragments on side (a) showing Apollo cloaked in a himation and playing a kithara with a sash hanging down, flanked on either side by Artemis and Leto, their faces painted in white, with fawns in-between, a bearded Poseidon holding a trident on the left, part of a caduceus visible on the right; the fragments on side (b) showing a warrior wearing a crested Corinthian Type helmet, holding two spears and a circular shield emblazoned with a white hound, a black hound at his feet, a bearded figure behind, wearing a Phrygian-style hat and short tunic, a bridled horse on the left, with the head of a male figure just behind and part of a bent leg; the neck with a frieze of double palmettes and lotus intersected by a linked chain, a band of red and black tongues on the shoulder, the decoration beneath each triple reeded handle consisting of interlinked palmette and lotus tendrils with a cross in the centre, with rays emanating from the base, a band of intertwined lotus buds above, 16½in (42cm) high, with heavy restoration and repainting
