A very rare Worcester dry mustard pot and cover
circa 1753-55
Of slender pear shape with a high domed cover with mushroom finial, printed in black and washed in colours with the 'Red Bull' pattern with two figures in conversation beside cattle, a further figure standing before rocks and trees, a red sun in the sky above, the cover with three fanciful winged insects and with the finial painted in green and red to match the colouring of the pattern on the base, within black line rims, 12cm high (very minor scratches to the red enamel on the bull) (2)

  • A very similar dry mustard pot lacking its cover was in The Rous Lench Collection, sold at Christie's 29 and 30 May 1990, lot 465. Another from the Lady Reigate collection, but with a non-matching painted lid, was exhibited by Simon Spero in his 2002 catalogue, fig. 22. The Red Bull pattern, derived from a Chinese prototype, was one of the first designs to be transfer-printed at Worcester. The pattern was used on teawares and is also recorded on rare wet mustard pots of similar date

27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
