Sold for £ 4,320 (US$ 5,735) inc. premium
A remarkable Richard Chaffers large jug
circa 1760-64
Of baluster shape with a looped strap handle, fully decorated in bright colours with birds in a garden, in the foreground a large peacock perched on a branch next to a long-eared owl, the reverse with two exotic pheasant-like birds by a leafy bush, small birds in flight overhead, 22.2cm high (repaired with extensive cracks)

Footnotes

  • This remarkable jug was exhibited in the English Ceramic Circle 50th Anniversary exhibition in 1977 and was illustrated in the catalogue, no 183. This distinctive decoration probably derives from Worcester's 'Mobbing Birds' pattern of circa 1756-60, often attributed to I. Rogers, although in Chaffers' version the birds are much larger in scale. The pattern was based on prints after C. Fenn, published in 'The Ladies Amusement' and elsewhere
