French loaf by window is one of the best-known early works by Oscar Rabin and was acquired from the artist by Eric Estorick for the first solo exhibition of Rabin's works in London. This exhibition was held at Estorick’s Grosvenor Gallery on 10 June–3 July, 1965 and was hugely successful with Western art collectors. It also attracted negative publicity in Soviet media, in which the powers that prevailed expressed reproving views on the artist's works (see Soviet Culture, 14 June, 1966; Moscow Artist, 26 May, 1967).
