The present lot is one of three drawings which were intended as illustrations of Henry Martin's Histoire de France. L'emeute (La destruction de Sodom - scene de revolution - composition) (cat 735) and Camille Desmoulins [au Palais Royal] (cat 737) were the other two illustrations intended for the book. The Camille Desmoulins is the most finished of the three. All three illlustrations are composed of strong diagonal lines which help to emphasise the movement of figures, engrossed in revolt and rioting. The illustrated version of Histoire de France remained incomplete.

We would like to thank the Comité Honoré Daumier for authenticating this lot.
