Footnotes

  • John Horsfall's account of the North African war was published in 1976. This copy is annotated by Spike Milligan on the flyleaf: "This man loves war, the traditional understatement is an attempt at 'humbleness'- his total lack of any compassion for men who deserted or inflicted wounds on themselves is painful to behold, the fact that he revels in their insufficiency is truly horrific, given his way, he would have shot them- heroism is his God- the dedication is the age old cliche of "We shall remember them"...a tribute to the dead. The maudling description of the dying German "Why we have to kill each other...you are such a gentleman etc...is the continuing story of glorifying war but pretending not to. I appreciate courage (it is one of the commonest forms of human virtues-) but I don't worship it- some are born braver than others as some are born taller. We can't claim credit for either- therefore do not use it as a boast against the meek. Spike Milligan."
