Footnotes

  • Tribunal tribulation at Gruyere Castle was originally published in The Bystander on 27 December 1916. It is the original published drawing, which is its original mount, exactly as it was when sold at an exhibition of Bairnsfather drawings held at the Greatorex Gallery in
London, from Jan-March 1919, no. 54. It may also have been exhibited at an earlier exhibition in
1917 at the Graphic Gallery in London. When the publishers of The Bystander sold the originals of Bairnsfather's drawings, they were all mounted and framed up in exactly the same style in these dark mounts with white lettering.

His initiation is a copy made by Bruce Bairnsfather of an earlier original drawing which was published in The Bystander on 12 April 1916 and which was later reproduced on page 12 of More Fragments from France in 1916. It would appear Bairnsfather made copies of a number of his original drawings in this style - with a solid black side panel in which the caption appeared. The reason for him making these copies is unknown.
