• William Plenderleath; Ensign 60th Foot 7.11.1793; Lieutenant 8.7.1795; Royal Fusiliers 29.7.1793; Captain 81st Foot, 16.2.1797; Major 21.4.1803; the late 100th Foot (raised in 1805, disbanded as the 99th in 1818) 1.1.1807. Retired 9.6.1808. He died at his home in Ramsgate 5.6.1863, aged 88.
  
  He was mentioned in London Gazette (Extraordinary) on 5th September 1806. The following was written by Major General Sir John Stuart from the Camp on the Plain of Maida July 6th 1806:
  
  "Brigadier-General Ackland, whose brigade was immediately on the left of the light infantry, with great spirit availed himself of this favourable moment to press instantly forward upon the coprs in his front; the brave 78th Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Macleod, and the 81st Regiment, under Major Plenderleath, both distinguished themselves on this occasion. The enemy fled with dismay and disorder before them, leaving the plain covered with their dead and wounded."
  
  In papers found after the death of Major General David Stewart it was noted that the enemy had been driven back after the first charge, but that he saw the officer commanding the 81st had appeared not to understand his instructions, or was not carrying them out, so he rode over and " a remedy was instantly applied", with this interference potentiallya serious calamity was prevented which might have affected the character of that officer and the general success of the day.
  
  There were seven Officers who were left to claim the MGS. However Major Plenderleath died before the Maida gold medal was issued.
