Footnotes

  • The features and stance of the present bronze bare a direct similarity to the monument erected in honour of La Bourdonnais in Saint Denis, Reunion. La Bourdonnais was born in Brittany in 1699 and served as a French Naval Officer and as a Governor of the Ile de France (Mauritius). He gained the name Mahé after a remarkable act of bravery whilst serving with the French East India Company as a lieutenant, when he aided the capture of the town off the Malabar Coast.
