Footnotes

  • Henri IV ruled France from 1589 to 1610. He was baptized as a Catholic but secretly raised as a protestant by his mother Jeanne d'Albret, the neice of King Francis I. His marriage to Charles IX's Catholic sister Marguerite de Valois on 18th August 1572 was seen by many as an attempt to unite warring fractions of Protestants and Catholics and bring peace to France; but resulted in the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre and further civil unrest.

A larger example of the present bronze was sold at Sotheby's London, 5/12/1989.
