Footnotes

  • Francis was the first son of Francis I of France and Claude, daughter of Louis XII. He was born in 1518 to much celebration, and records state that his father was so overwhelmed by his new son he declared him to be "a beautiful dauphin who is the most beautiful and puissant child one could imagine and who will be the easiest to bring up" and his mother reputedly cried "tell the King that he is even more beautiful than himself".

Francis suffered an unfortunately short life, spending his formative years as a hostage of Charles V in Spain languishing in a prison for nearly four years. He died at the age of just eighteen, before he ever reached the throne and in what many believed were suspicious circumstances. The years in a dark prison must have had a severe affect on his health, but many contemporary sources were quick to believe that his siser-in-law Catherine de Medici had poisoned him to ensure her husband Henri was next in line to the throne.
