Footnotes

  • Saturn is closely identified with the Greek god Cronus, the son of the the heavens (Uranus) and the earth (Gaia). The grotesque theme of the father devouring his child originates from the early Hellenistic poet Hesiod, who recounted that Chronus, having deposed his father to take power; is warned that his own son will in turn seize power from him. To ensure his own supremacy Cronus desperately devoures all his children at birth; it is only the sixth son that survives due to the cunning of their mother Rhea tricking Cronus in to eating a stone covered in cloth instead. She hides Zeus who eventually fulfils the prophecy and becomes supreme ruler.
