Footnotes

  • This instrument was presented to George Formby in 1930 by Dallas, the instrument makers. it would have been used for both recording a live work. It was offered in the auction in June 1961 as lot 459 (an original catalogue is included in the documents) and purchased by Frank Formby. After about ten years it was sold to Bill Logan, President of the George Formby Society. It was then purchased by Stan Evans, editor of the Society's magazine, 'The Vellum', on behalf of former-Beatle George Harrison.

At a concert in Digswell, Welwyn Garden City, George Harrison met Jeffrey Formby, George Formby's nephew, and George offered to return the instrument back to the family as a gift. Jeffrey preferred to purchase it, however. A copy of a letter from George Harrison to Jeffrey, dated 1991, is included with the lot.
