An elaborate detachable finial over a strapped bell mounted on four matching turned finials on a top plate set with the main hammer and the quarter bells and hammers, this plate in turn supported on a pierced frieze protecting the reconverted balance wheel, all set on four boldly cast Doric columns terminating in ball feet, the 7-inch silvered Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minute band enclosing trident half hour markers and a well engraved centre with full, flowing signature above a flower head, and blued steel hands, the weight driven movement with restored verge and balance wheel escapement sounding the hours on the large bell and the quarters on a smaller pair. Some rebuilding to the upper frame, bells and hammers. 51cm (20ins) high.

  • Peter Closen is one of the best known of the First Period makers. He was involved in the very beginnings of the Clockmkers Company in 1631 and rose to become an Assistant and then Warden in 1637/8. William Speakman (see lot 168) and John Wise were just two of his many apprentices.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
