Footnotes

  • The so-called ‘County’ class cruisers were mostly, but not exclusively, named after the shire counties of England. They were designed to comply with the terms of the international Washington Treaty to limit armaments, which was signed by the Great Powers in 1922. In all, eleven vessels were built and completed during the 1920s and, although they had their critics, all proved invaluable in the Second World War. The class displaced 9,750 tons, measured 630 feet in length and could steam at 31-32 knots at full speed. Their main armament consisted of 8-8in. guns, although they also carried a variety of other calibres which greatly improved their overall capabilities and usefulness.
