Footnotes

  • During the War of 1812, the USS 'Constitution', cruising off the coast of Brazil, came upon the British frigate 'Java', originally a French 38 gun captured by the British off Madagascar. 'Java' was carrying the Commander designate for the East Indies, Lieutenant General Hislop and his staff, plus several other Captains and officers in addition to her usual complement, but engaged with the 'Constitution' at 2.10pm. Vunerable to the American's superior firepower, she was soon totally dismasted and threatened with a final raking, 'Java' surrendered at 5.25. After taking the crew on board, Commander B of the 'Constitution' decided the 'Java' was past saving and burnt the ship, which blew up.

This single-ship action, coming soon after an earlier success by the 'Consititution', radically altered British strategy towards the American "super Frigates" and henceforth no vessel smaller than a ship of the Line was permitted to engage them.
