Footnotes

  • We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for confirming the attribution of the present drawing upon the basis of a photograph and for suggesting a date of circa 1650. He believes that A youth holding a glass and carafe may be a preparatory study, with significant differences, for the figure of the daughter on the right of the painting of Lot and his Daughters of 1651 now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. He notes that Guercino as a draughtsman differed from many of his contemporaries in that he 'tried out in his drawings a number of different ideas for a given figure, sometimes rejecting all of them in the painted result. The consequence, in purely formal terms, is that the connection between one of his drawings and the painting for which it was made may be only generic.'
