A large bronze Egyptian figure of a high-ranking priest
Early 19th Century
Standing with his left leg advanced, wearing a bag wig and a high-waisted long kilt fastened at the front, with a rectangular pectoral strung at the neck, holding a naos containing a figure of the god Osiris, mounted on a flaring pillar, the back pillar inscribed with hieroglyphic text on three sides, standing on a rectangular integral base, 49in (125cm) high

Footnotes

  • This bronze is after an Ancient Egyptian Late Period (26th-27th Dynasty) type usually found carved in graywacke. Osiris is often the god appearing in the naos (shrine) but other deities such as Neith have been found in statuary originating from their particular cult centres. During the Late Period, we often see a revival of older styles from the Middle Kingdom Period, as shown here by the Middle Kingdom attributes of the bag-wig and high-waisted kilt. Cf. E. R. Russmann, Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art from the British Museum, (London 2001), p. 241, no. 132, a 26th Dynasty graywacke standing figure of the priest Amenhotep holding a naos.
