Footnotes

  • The most successful Aston Martin ever, the V8 enjoyed a record breaking production run lasting from 1969 to 1988, with 2,919 cars sold. Described by former Aston Martin Chairman Victor Gauntlett as, ‘a stylish thoroughbred, beautifully built, luxurious, fast and immensely safe,’ the V8 was built in several variants, the Volante convertible introduced with carburettor induction in 1978 being superseded in January 1986 by a Weber fuel-injected Series 2 version. The latter is one of the rarer and more exclusive V8s, only 172 being built against the 438 of the preceding carburettor-equipped model. Road tested by Motor in 1979, the ‘ultimate soft-top’ recorded a 0-60mph time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 150mph.
This left- hand drive example was purchase new from the Aston Martin factory by its first owner, a Middle Eastern Princess, and first registered in Monaco where it was kept garaged. The factory-serviced car had covered 13,000 kilometres from new when it was purchased at Brooks’ Geneva Sale in March 1997 (Lot 285) by the second (London-based) owner, who had added a further 31,000 kilometres to the total by the time it was offered for sale again at Bonhams’ Works Service auction in May 2003 (Lot 244). ‘15466’ was bought by the current vendor in 2004 and since then has been serviced by marque specialists, Pugsley & Lewis, most recently in April 2008. In August 2004 P & L carried out a major (10,000-mile) service, which included replacing the radiator (with high efficiency alternative), thermostat, engine mounts, wishbone bushes, track-rod ends and speedometer (preserving the odometer reading) while the cylinder heads were removed, stripped and skimmed, the total cost for this work being £10,688 (bill on file). The car’s use since then has been confined to the occasional trip to Europe.
Finished in Old English White with red-piped magnolia leather interior, ‘15466’ has automatic transmission, fully lined power-operated hood and a Blaupunkt Toronto stereo system. In addition to the aforementioned invoices, the car comes with additional service history with Nick Mee and Works Service, current road fund licence, MoT to May 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
