The 1942 model Fords were introduced on September 12, 1941 to somewhat muted fanfare. It was clear even then that the war in Europe was having a major effect upon the economy of the United States and that production for domestic civilian markets was going to be affected by the defense effort. Production for the war in Europe had begun to siphon resources and factory capacity away from domestic markets. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had already declared a state of National Defense Emergency.

That, of course, all changed on December 7, 1941, less than three months after the 1942 Fords were introduced, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Coordinated attacks on American and British bases and interests throughout the Pacific and the Far East followed. America reacted quickly, and in early February 1942 civilian automobile production ceased “for the duration of hostilities.”

The 1942 Fords incorporated significant changes even from the redesigned and larger 1941 models, especially in the area of body design which now fully enclosed the vestigial running boards and sat a full inch closer to the road by virtue of a number of changes to the suspension. The lower stance was accompanied by a wider track and not only had an enhanced visual effect but also lowered the center of gravity for better handling. Other changes included making the grille of stamped steel which was easier to repair than cast grille elements and also saved scarce materials including zinc and chrome needed for war production.

The 221 cubic inch V-8 now rated 90 horsepower, as it had since the 1941 models were introduced, making the 1942 Ford one of the most peppy Fords ever built.

The Hogan Collection’s example was one of three cars Jack Hogan bought at the Towe Museum disposition auction in Sacramento several years ago. Like the other ex-Towe cars it is highly original and in exceptional condition for its age. The odometer showed 80,562 miles at the time of cataloging which may well be original, judging from its history and condition. Upon arriving in Oregon the only major work it required was to remove, clean and restore the gas tank.

It is equipped with wheel beauty rings, wide whitewall tires, grille guard, a hat-type oil bath air cleaner, oil filter, exhaust turndowns and has a whitewall spare tire mounted on a correctly striped wheel with beauty ring. Notably, it is equipped with Ford’s intriguing hot air heater which keeps the Tudor’s occupants toasty warm without the complication, fitting, cores and hoses of hot water heaters. On cold days it also kicks out heat almost instantly with little need to wait for the engine, radiator and coolant to warm up.

Under the hood this 1942 Ford is all original except for the expected service replacement items. The interior is exceptionally sound and original throughout. Even the glass is original and in excellent condition. One of this car’s appeal to Jack Hogan, whose Oregon roots run deep, is the 1943 Oregon license sticker on the windshield. It is Ford’s top of the line in 1942.

The Hogan Collection’s 1942 21A Super Deluxe Tudor Sedan is Black with Vermillion striping and Beige cloth interior. It has been judged a Three Category Rouge car three times by the Early Ford V-8 Club. Its appearance is nearly unprecedented for preservation and presentation, and it is one of the most rare and important Fords of the prewar era with only 47,199 built in the 1942 Fords’ brief five month production run.

A measure of the 1942 Ford’s quality, value, engineering, design and appeal can be found in the model’s resurrection for production after the war essentially unchanged as 1946-1948 models. They are close, but nothing else has the appeal, rarity and significance of a 1942 model Ford.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.
