probably from the experimental phase of production at Worcester, of plain globular shape with a pointed finial, painted in a primitive manner with a hut nestling between cloud-like rocks and reeds on an island with trees to one side and dotted mountain peaks in the distance, the same design repeated on the reverse, a sampan with a sail and 'floating rocks' in front of similar dotted mountain peaks painted on the cover, 11.5cm high (cracked around the circumference and restuck with additional crazing cracks, a small section of the neck restuck) (2)

Footnotes

  • A very similar teapot without a cover was in the Watney Collection, part 3, lot 914. Another with related painting is in the A J Smith collection illustrated by Simon Spero (2005), fig. 15. The underfired and crazed nature of the paste resembles some Limehouse porcelain, while the shape and decoration provide links with Lund's Bristol and early Worcester. An experimental plate in an American private collection and finds from the lowest levels of factory site excavations are discussed by John Sandon (1993), pl. 1 and colour pl. 1. This may represent Dr Wall and William Davis's porcelain invention, developed at Broad Street in Worcester and made at Warmstry house before their merger with the Lund's Bristol manufactory.
