Lot 117
A very rare Limehouse salt
circa 1746-48

Sold for £ 18,000 (US$ 23,186) inc. premium
A very rare Limehouse salt
circa 1746-48
Of circular silver shape, supported on three claw feet with applied masks at the terminals, the masks picked out in blue and flanked by painted leaves and tendrils, 8.8cm wide (misshapen during firing)

Footnotes

  • Although curiously misshapen during manufacture, the proprietors of Limehouse presumably felt that this salt was suitable for sale. A large amount of melted and distorted kiln wasters were discarded on the Limehouse factory site and these reveal the enormous problems encountered during the kiln firings. Two very different forms of Limehouse salts are recorded in enamelled versions and these are illustrated in Limehouse Ware Revealed. No similar blue and white Limehouse salt is known. Susi and Ian Sutherland purchased this piece from Reggie Andrade in January 1965 and always kept with it a scrap of paper bearing a quatrain from Omar Khayyam that Andrade felt summed up this distorted but enormously charming relic from the earliest period of English porcelain
