Footnotes

  • John Francis was initially intended for a life in farming, but, recognising his artistic talents, his friends urged him to make a career in sculpture. In 1810 he came to London, where he studied under Francis Chantrey. Five years later he caught the attention of the Earl of Leicester, and he exhibited a bust of his patron at the Royal Academy in 1820. From there his future was assured as the iconographer of the Whig party and a particular favourite of King William IV.
