Footnotes

  • Smith executed several versions of this portrait, showing Fox seated in his study at St Anne’s Hill. A variant in oils with the sitter’s hair less unkempt and showing a view through to sky instead of bookcases was sold Sotheby’s, New York, 6 December 1980 (lot 125). Another pastel version was sold Christie’s, London, 7 November 1995 (lot 60), engraved S.W. Reynolds 1802 and again 13 October 1806 with differences. A further pastel version, closer to the present example was sold Christie’s, London, 10 July 1984 (lot 153). One of these works was probably the portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802, no.346. Smith painted a further posthumous version, signed and dated 1808, depicting an older Fox, sold Christie’s, London, 27 June 1980 (lot 134).

This portrait shows Fox as a political man of letters, at the period he was writing his 'History of the Revolution'. The artist shared his subject's liberal sympathies, especially Fox’s opposition to the slave trade, which the statesman pledged to overthrow as Foreign Secretary in Lord Grenville’s coalition ministry.
