Footnotes

  • This immensely impressive Indianapolis 500-type single-seater racing car is one of the production batch of 33 manufactured by March Engineering Ltd at Bicester, England, for the 1987 CART American Championship season. The 87C had been developed from the preceding year’s March 86C model which had introduced a new honeycomb-aluminium monocoque chassis design with a moulded composite upper section. CART regulations had banned all-composite chassis structures, and the new March design series carried the 2.65-litre Cosworth-Ford DFX turbocharged V8 engine as standard within a revised new body shape. The cars featured pull-rod front suspension and rocker-arm rear with the coil-springs mounted horizontal and parallel to the gearbox assembly. While 38 86Cs had been supplied to the eager American market for the 1986 season, orders flooded in for 33 of the replacement and updated 87C version in 1987, which differed from the earlier model primarily in just the revised rear structure and the aerodynamic side-pod profiles.

In 1986 March cars won no fewer than 14 of the CART-PPG Championship races, with Bobby Rahal victorious in the jewel-in-the-crown Indianapolis 500-Miles, and also at Toronto, Lexington, Montreal, Michigan and Laguna Seca to win the ‘Champcar’ title from fellow March-Cosworth drivers Michael Andretti and Danny Sullivan. Other March race winners in CART-PPG that season included Kevin Cogan, Johnny Rutherford and the great Emerson Fittipaldi.

For 1987 the factory updates which produced this Type 87C model proved to be matched by the rival Lola concern, to which Rahal switched to win his second consecutive CART-PPG title. March 87Cs such as this example offered here carried Michael Andretti to second place in the Championship for the second year running, followed by Al Unser4 Jr and Roberto Guerrero. March 87C race winners that season included Guerrero (Phoenix and Lexington ‘200s’), Al Unser Sr (Indy ‘500’), Michael Andretti (Milwaukee and Miami ‘200s’, Pennsylvania and Michigan ‘500’), Emerson Fittipaldi (Cleveland and Toronto), and Rick Mears (Pocono ‘500’).

This particular March 87C is ex-Gary Trout Motorsports with composite chassis properly serial-number and inspection plated. The 90-degree turbocharged V8 engine – rated at 700bhp - drives via a 5-speed transaxle and we understand that the car was imported into Belgium via Antwerp on December 5, 1989 via Douglas L. Hardwick, USMC (rtd). The present vendor is the car’s third owner only.

During the 1980s the long line of March Indycars dominated the American speedway racing scene for long periods. There is considerable demand for these cars today as display items at motor shows and exhibitions of all kind, and of course they feature regularly in such high-profile showcase events as the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is an attractive and realistically priced example of the marque.
