1984 March-Chevrolet 847 CANAM single-seater
Chassis no. 847/02
In succession to the brilliantly successful – and now legendary – series of unlimited-capacity sports car races which comprised the CanAm Championship from 1966, the title was revived 1977-1986 for a new Sports Car Club of American competition catering for aerodynamic-bodied single-seat racing cars such as this striking March model 847.

These 5-litre Chevrolet V8-powered, 500-horsepower projectiles starred in a series of spectacular races on the cream of American road circuits. Three of the March 847s were built up by RK Motorsports for the 1984 CanAm series, and they were driven primarily by the late Jim Crawford – former Team Lotus Formula 1 driver – in the Championship, ending the season second overall to Champion Michael Roe. Mike Engstrand also drove a March 847 in CanAm competition.

The single-seat CanAm Championship featured some of the sport’s greatest drivers at various points in their respective careers, the CanAm Championship winners’ list including such illustrious names as future Ferrari Formula 1 star Patrick Tambay from France (1977 and 1980), Alan Jones (future Formula 1 World Champion, from Australia, 1978), the great Jackie Ickx (multiple Le Mans 24-Hour race winner, from Belgium, 1979), Geoff Brabham (son of triple F1 World Champion Sir Jack, and future multiple IMSA Champion, 1981), Al Under Jr (Indy winner, national Champion, 1982), and Jacques (brother of Gilles) Villeneuve, Canada, 1983.

This particular March-Chevrolet has been driven at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in 2001-2002 and it is surely one of the most imposing and impressive of all modern-era road racing cars with its combination of single centreline driving seat and wheel-enveloping aerodynamic bodywork. In period these machines were regarded as being amongst the fastest road racing machines in the motor sporting world, rivalling Formula 1 in their outright performance potential – especially in a straight line!

There is considerable interest and demand for such cars – unusual and rare in Europe – for display and exhibition purposes while the organisers of such specialist events as the superb Goodwood Festival of Speed in England have also often shown interest in featuring such cars.
