Polished Seymchan Meteorite Complete Slice
Iron, Coarse Octahedrite, IIE Pallasite
Magadan, Russia

Brilliantly mirror-polished on both sides, a complete Seymchan slice provides an unusual and dramatic presentation of this meteorite's iron composition. Meteorites are fragments of extraterrestrial bodies (asteroids, planets and moons) made up of nickel-iron alloys and stone silicates. Seymchan was discovered by a geological survey party near the Hekandue River, in the Magadan District of Russia. It is believed that Seymchan originated near the core/mantle boundary of a differentiated planetary body thought to be an asteroid (a small, rocky body that orbits the Sun) which was destroyed during the formation of our solar system, approximately 5.5 to 6.0 billion years ago. The present offering is one of the largest complete slices of an iron meteorite ever offered. With natural edges and a high polish, it provides for an impressive and aesthetic presentation. This lot is a bookmatch to the following lot. Measures 23 x 36 x 1in, Weighs 72 kg
