Palm Frond with Fish on Irregular Matrix
Sabalites sp. Knightia eocaena
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming
Evoking the subtropical Eocene climate of what is now southwestern Wyoming (a high desert environment), a rare fossil palm is displayed in limestone matrix with a very large Knightia, the state fossil of Wyoming. The dramatic contrast between the deep brown fossils and the limestone matrix is characteristic of the specimens of the Green River Formation. Palms are arguably the most aesthetically desirable fossils from this famous locality, which yields some of the world’s best-preserved aquatic fossils. As well as a valuable display specimen, the piece - backed with wood and fitted with a French cleat for display - may serve as wall art. Matrix measures 69 x 39in; Palm width 43in; Fish length 6 3/4in
