Large Triceratops Horn
Triceratops horridus
Late Cretaceous
Hell Creek Formation, Wyoming

One of the most recognizable dinosaurs known, Triceratops is truly iconic. Displaying a small nasal horn and two large horns over its eyes, it was a formidable creature. Epic struggles against Tyrannosaurus rex have been depicted in books and movies, but the interaction between the two was probably more of a stand-off than an actuality. Yet, there is one specimen with a broken off and healed orbital horn displaying impressions of teeth marks of a T. rex. In life, Triceratops horns would have had a horny sheath that could have been as large as 20 to 50 percent the size of its bony core. The tip of the present horn has been reconstructed.
