A composite hunting sword
18th century
The 21 1/2 inch single edged blade with 5 inch false edge and retaining traces of engraved decoration above the hilt. Gilt brass hilt comprising guard with recurving quillons, the finials molded with foliage and with integral downcurving shell cast and chased with the bust of a general over a panoply of guns and shields and flanked by mounted trumpeters; simple banded ferrule; domed pommel cap molded with hunter and hounds pursuing a boar. Associated tapered bone grip of octagonal section, the upper end pierced, probably for a knucklebow.
Condition: Blade showing areas of pitting and wear. Hilt retains traces of gilt finish. Grip period but not original to this sword.
