c.1933 Crocker Overhead-Camshaft Speedway Engine
There is ‘rare’ and there is ‘extremely rare’ and then there is ‘one off,’ and that is what this engine is: a true ‘one of a kind.’ Al Crocker’s single-cylinder race engines were built in Los Angeles for Night Speedway racing to compete with Harley and JAP-engined machines in the late 1920s and early ’30s. The new overhead-camshaft Crocker engine, built circa 1933, was intended to supercede the successful overhead-valve Crocker speedway engine. This prototype unit was installed in a factory racing chassis by Crocker and run successfully at Ascot Speedway in Los Angeles in the mid-1930s. Despite its undoubted promise, the ohc speedway engine project was soon dropped, Crocker’s priorities having shifted to building a v-twin road machine. Fewer than two dozen of the early Crocker speedway engines were made and this overhead-camshaft engine is the only one known. This ohc engine resurfaced in the 1970s and was rebuilt by Gene Rhyne and Pete Smiley, both noted racing proponents, and has not been installed in a chassis or fired up since the rebuild. It would certainly be possible to build a motorcycle around this engine, the ideal starting point being an in-period speedway frame, and have the only one of its kind known to man.
