  • Provenance:
Acquired directly from the artist by a private collection in San Francisco, late 1800s
By descent through the family until 1990
Private Collection, Southern California (acquired by the present owner in 1990)

    Literature:
Brother Fidelis Cornelius, 'Keith, Old Master of California', G.E Putnam's Sons, New York, 1942, vol.1, p. 44.

    Exhibition:
Palm Springs Desert Museum, Palm Springs, California, Denney Western Art Wing, October 1993-June 1995. During this loan, the painting was featured in the museum's exhibition of 50 paintings by William Keith, November 5, 1993-January 2, 1994

    Note:
In Brother Cornelius' book, 'Keith, Old Master of California', he makes mention of a painting of this same title. The passage describes unwrapping a bundle of unstretched canvases shortly after opening a studio at 417 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. "He unrolls the large 'Bavarian Alps', probably the same which is today at Mills College; and there are two sprightly sketches of landscape near Munich - one called 'Road to the Village', the other a delicate Corot gray but more vigorous in color and form and the fresh rainy atmosphere, very true, even to the blue horizon. And there is a large 'Scene near Munich' similar to the 'Road to the Village'; there are also two large canvases more like figure or story pictures, 'Spring' and 'Return of the Fishermen'".
