For sheer quality few manufacturers matched the high standards set by Marstons Wolverhampton-produced Supreme Sunbeam. John Marston, from a family involved in the manufacture of japanned metalware and tinplate products, had joined the ranks of local pioneers Lanchester and Wolseley in nearby Birmingham in building his first motor car as early as 1899. Sunbeam established a distinguished history which would embrace successes on the race circuits and in outstanding World Land Speed Record achievements. The range of refined touring cars offered in the late 1920s and 1930s benefited from race breeding and also the massive publicity achieved from racing and record successes boosted sales. The 16.9hp Sunbeam of 1930 was the smallest offering in the Sunbeam range that year yet the smooth, six-cylinder engine, coupled with Wolverhampton-built coachwork, provided supreme luxury motoring for the middle professional man.
This barn discovery car was acquired by the family of the present owner in 1958. Previous recorded owners in the old style buff logbook include a Mabel McDonald of Asenby, near Thirsk, in 1942, John Clark of Harrogate in 1951 and yet another lady owner, Nancy Pearson of Knaresborough, in 1951. The car appears to be substantially complete in all major respects and the engine turns freely despite having been unused for many years. The foursome coupé coachwork is generally sound and the car offers, in our opinion, a relatively straightforward restoration project. The vendor believes that the headlamps, not illustrated, will be located prior to the sale. VN 1433, first registered in North Yorkshire on 16th April 1930, is offered strictly as viewed and comes with old buff logbook, Swansea V5 registration document and also a contemporary Handbook of Instructions. The vendor of the car offers to allow the successful buyer the opportunity to search his garage for any elusive missing parts, by private arrangement, within four weeks of the sale date.
