Footnotes

  • Many’s the automobile manufacture that has failed either because of unfavourable trading conditions or the fundamental weakness of its product, but in the case of the short-lived Michigan Motor Car Company it was the criminality of its directors that precipitated the firm’s demise. The Michigan story had begun in 1904 when the Michigan Buggy Company, of Kalamazoo, motorised one of its carriages by fitting a 3½hp single-cylinder engine and sold the result for $450. Michigan’s motorised buggy remained available for several years but it would be 1911 before the newly constituted Michigan Motor Car Company built its first ‘proper’ automobile. Engineer W H Cameron (previously with Willys-Overland and Flanders) and coachwork designer John A Campbell were recruited to help produce Michigan’s new 40hp ‘four’, which was marketed, somewhat clumsily, as ‘A Mechanically Right and Right Priced Car Supreme in the Forty Field.’ Sadly, this soundly engineered, well-made and competitively priced car was undermined by the fraudulent actions of the company’s stewards, many of whom were arraigned in front of a grand jury in Kalamazoo County on various charges including falsifying the accounts. Despite attempts to rescue the firm and continue production, Michigan had been fatally wounded by the scandal and in 1915 its factory was sold to the States Motor Car Company.
This rare American automobile was imported into the UK in 1989 by its former owner (now deceased) and acquired by the vendor in 1995. We are advised that, although the vehicle appears to operate satisfactorily, little is known about its actual mechanical condition and thus careful re-commissioning and the customary safety checks are recommended prior to further use. A non-original magneto and the fitting of a starter motor are the only notified deviations from factory specification. Right-hand drive, like many American cars of the period, the vehicle is offered with VCC dating certificate, current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
