Footnotes

  • The Stellite followed the fashion for light cars which prevailed in the years either side of the Great War. It was built by the Electric & Ordnance Accessories Co., part of the mighty Vickers empire and was therefore a close relation of the Wolseley motor car sharing many features with Wolseleys of that era. Wolseley jealously guarded its excellent reputation, selling large luxury cars to nobility and indeed royalty, and therefore the light car was marketed under the Stellite banner so as not to impact on the marketing of the luxury cars. Wolseley need not have been concerned as the Stellite was a great success. It was offered initially with a two-speed gearbox mounted in the rear axle and, although this was perfectly adequate for normal driving, the later three-speed box, as fitted to this car, certainly proved a real advantage. The inlet-over-exhaust engine configuration was highly effective, the 1,075cc four-cylinder engine giving the car a respectable 30mph or so touring speed and passenger comfort was provided by quarter-elliptic leaf spring suspension all round.

This car was owned by J H Dowson of Middleton St. George, County Durham, in 1952 and rallied by him in V.C.C. events. It was acquired for The Potter Collection in 1966 for just £690. The receipt comes with the car. X 4544 is presented in blue livery with black wings and yellow wheels. It is equipped with Veena brass acetylene headlamps, a ‘Discus’ patent folding windscreen, Lucas King of the Road bulb horn and brass rear view mirror. It is offered with a V.C.C. Dating Certificate No.313 issued in May 1953 and carries a V.C.C. dating plate.

The writer can testify from experience as to the lively performance of this model which is equally welcome at V.C.C. events and the ever popular Light Car and Edwardian Section events of the V.S.C.C. X 4544 comes with an old style buff log book, expired MoT issued in June 1972 and a Swansea V5C registration document. Following a long period on showroom display it will benefit from the usual careful recommissioning.
