Footnotes

  • Introduced in October 1908, Henry Ford’s Model ‘T’ boasted a chassis which contrived to be both light-weight and durable, thanks to the pioneering use of Vanadium steel. It was powered by a conventional, four-cylinder, side valve engine and transmission was a simple-to-use, two-speed planetary unit. Some 15 million owners were to purchase the Model ‘T’ in one guise or another in a production run that lasted until 1927.

This car is presented in landaulette form, one of the rarest body styles on a Model T Ford and probably by an English provincial coachbuilder. It was acquired by Tom Potter in April 1961 from R C Wills of Bolton-le-Sands and previous recorded owners in the old style buff log book include H Carpenter of Somerset in 1946, H R Trimnell of that county in 1949 and I S Kemp of Devon in 1952. A later green log book is also offered with the car which appears to have been last MoT tested in 1973. The car is presented in black livery with black buttoned upholstery to the front and pleated leather cloth to the rear. The coachwork features a drop-down division between driver and rear passengers, loop door handles, railway carriage-style side windows to the rear and two fold-down occasional rear seats. The engine is of U.S.A. manufacture. A Bosch magneto provides ignition and the car is equipped with electric headlamps and ‘bun’ type oil side lamps. The car is to left-hand drive specification. The brass radiator and ‘square’ bonnet has been fitted during the present ownership. The car was dated 1917 by the Veteran Car Club in the 1960’s, probably relying upon a mis-read engine number. The engine number as quoted above and the general specification of the car suggests the year of manufacture to be 1920. The Swansea V5C document also records the engine number incorrectly as 374475 (again probably a misreading or transcription of the correct number). Prospective buyers are advised to carry out their own further research to confirm the 1920 date given prior to liaising with DVLA Swansea to put the records straight. The car is sold as viewed and considered well worthy of recommissioning and further restoration, perhaps in readiness for the Centenary Year of the Model T Ford in 2008.
