Footnotes

  • Wolseley announced the Hornet Special in April 1932, developed from the Hornet which first appeared in 1930. It was powered by a six-cylinder, overhead camshaft engine, itself developed from the Morris Minor engine of 1928 but, in the case of the Hornet Special, featuring six cylinders. For the 1934 season the rear axle was under-slung and a cross-flow cylinder head fitted. A radical change in 1935 was the installation of the 1,604cc 14hp engine from the Wolseley New Fourteen, developing some 50bhp. A stylish sports car, it was marketed in both two-seater and four-seater versions.

This ‘barn discovery’ has been in the present family ownership since 1961 and, although it has not seen the light of day for many years, was certainly known at one stage to the Wolseley Hornet Special Club. Although originally a four seater, the rear two seat area has been boarded over to provide luggage stowage for the motor tour. It appears to be substantially complete in all respects and, although rather ‘barn weary’, presents a relatively straightforward challenge to the enthusiast restorer. Dashboard instrumentation appears complete and the car is equipped with side screens and a hood frame and comes with headlamp stone guards (not fitted). BLW 680 is offered with a buff log book dating from 1961, recording original registration on 5th January 1935, together with a Swansea V5 registration document. The vendor of the car offers to allow the successful buyer the opportunity to search his garage for any elusive missing parts, by private arrangement, within four weeks of the sale date.
