1925 Scott 596cc Two-Speed Flying Squirrel
Registration no. XX 4372 (See below)
Frame no. 854
Engine no. Z1382A
Alfred Angas Scott built his first motorcycle in 1908 and as early as 1914 the ‘yowling’ of his first siamesed, water-cooled, two-stroke was to be heard on test in the Yorkshire Dales. Scott won the TT in 1912, repeating that success in 1913. The production models of the 1920’s reflected this sporting ancestry, the Flying Squirrel retaining the distinctive, inclined, water-cooled, parallel twin configuration and being offered in both 500cc and 600cc specifications. Scotts were to excel in contemporary trials in the hands of the likes of Jeffries, Moore and Wood and competed actively in the Senior TT in the hands of such notables as the Langton brothers, Mainwaring and Langman.

This two-speeder was first registered in March 1925 and comes with an old buff logbook dating from December 1949. It was originally fitted with engine no. Y7833 and clearly has been the subject of an engine change in the past. In 1959 it belonged to Harold Featherstone of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was acquired for The Potter Collection from Jos. Errington.

It should be noted that the entitlement to the registration number XX 4372 is, at the time of cataloguing, the matter of a dispute and it is hoped that this will be resolved with the DVLA by the time of the sale. This machine has been in The Potter Collection, unused, for over thirty years and the old buff logbook clearly shows the frame no. 854 as displayed on the bike. Prospective buyers should check with the saleroom office at the sale as to the current status. Following a period of showroom display the usual careful recommissioning will be well rewarded.
