Footnotes

  • Originally the Sunbeam factory demonstrator and always carrying the distinctive UK 1560 registration, this 1926-built F Series 3-Litre Super Sports was loaned to Autocar magazine for a feature on Touring the Lake District in a Sporting Motor Car which appeared in the 17 June issue of 1927. Powered by the Wolverhampton firm’s twin cam six of 2916cc cc capacity and with the benefit of front brakes, Tapley brake performance gauge and Jaeger clock with stopwatch, the 4-Seater Tourer cost first owner P M Gatty £1125 when new, being one of seventeen vehicles belonging to the late owner of Overwater Hall that were regularly serviced before the war by Graham and Roberts Limited of Carlisle.

Original correspondence confirms the Gatty family selling UK 1560 in the spring of 1952 directly to second owner Charles Hull, who used to commute between London and Lincolnshire where he worked at BRM and, in whose Bourne workshops, the engine was first rebuilt in 1955 with specially cast white metal bearings and Forshaw-supplied standard pistons. In 1976 however, and with Hull’s brother driving, the chassis was cracked traversing a hump-back bridge and the car was garage-stored until 1990, when the brothers decided to re-commission it for a re-run of the original Lakeland Tour sixty-three years earlier.

Sympathetic chassis work was carried out and the engine and gearbox totally rebuilt from 1999 by acknowledged Twin Cam expert Keith Taylor of Hemingbrough, North Yorkshire. A three-page report by Taylor describes in great detail what his initial inspection revealed and much further correspondence between Taylor and Hull fully charts the work carried out. Further invoices record some sensitively executed trim work by Protectus of North Yorkshire in January 2001 as well as refurbishment carried out to the car by Ted de la Riviere of Beach Hill Garage, Reading, between March 2001 and March 2003. It was following the death of his brother, that the by then virtually completed project was acquired from Hull by the vendor, who, after Sunbeam themselves, would appear therefore to be only the third private keeper of UK 1560 since new.

During current ownership, dual-ignition and charging problems have been resolved and, following the rebuild, the engine carefully run-in. The half-shafts have been renewed, more efficient finned brake drums with soft linings fitted and the tyres replaced. Detailing has included a small amount of re-plating of components in the engine bay where period-correct Claudel Hobson 45 AZP carburettors and a BTH CE6 magneto with automatic advance are still present.

When catalogued, with 18,323 miles displayed and in the midst of preparations for an MOT (the last certificate expired July 2005), the blue over black paintwork exuded patina and the blue leather seats appeared to be extraordinarily original. Interested bidders are nonetheless advised to check out the presence of this latest test certificate among the documents which include a current V5C confirming all the numbers. Apart from a hood on the car, also present but not fitted are side-screens and a tonneau cover, the original ammeter and a pair of pre-war Notek fog and driving lamps. The auctioning of UK 1560 here today provides clients with a rare opportunity to become the next owner of a highly significant Sunbeam and a most desirable open sporting motor car from the 1920s.
