Footnotes

  • Although commencing production of canoes at Neuilly-Sur-Seine on the outskirts of Paris in 1937, it was not until post-war that Frantz Liuzzi became one of the most prolific constructors of extremely handsome power boats capable of very high performance. “At the same time, the Gordini and Christian Dior of the boat world” is how the Revue Moteur regarded him. For with every ‘Monocoque FL’ boat that left his workshops personally tested by Le Patron, Liuzzi craftsmanship in moulded mahogany became much sought after by the Riviera set, even more so after movie star Erroll Flynn ordered one.

Establishing a new 90.68kph world record for Runabouts Ist of May 1952 and going on to be the first of the in-board category to exceed 100kph certainly helped to make the marque a major player in racing. One of the most successful owners was Roger Brunet, whose Liuzzi Lido carrying his number 11 won the Paris 6 Hours to take the Class II European Championship in 1957. Along with most Liuzzi boats of the period, the Runabout was fitted with a BPM motor from former Ferrari engineers Botta and Puricelli. With power outputs from 125-250bhp available, even standard production Liuzzi-BPMs had 70-100kph capability, while later boats had Alfa Romeo engines.

According to the vendor, having been retired from front line competition, the ex-Brunet Liuzzi was assigned to water-ski duties prior to a long spell of storage, not being re-discovered until 1975. In recent years, the 5m 40 long/1m 80 wide craft has been treated to a clearly most thorough restoration with oak keel and mahogany hull and decking extensively refurbished, and original BPM replaced with Chrysler 289ci, a 5.7-litre V8 though to be of 1970s manufacture and said to produce circa 260bhp via Velvet-Drive transmission. Upgrades include electronic ignition and alternator.

When consigned, ‘Sois Sage II’, one of only five surviving Lidos known to the Cercle du Motonautisme Classique, successfully completed a water-test, proving to be on-the-button with fresh battery, running well and performing strongly and lifting up onto the plane in fine Runabout style. Copper rivets would appear to be firm beneath well varnished woodwork, whilst the interior for up to six looks very much as it would have done ex-factory with trim in white and blue clean and tidy, and period dash, instruments and Liuzzi branded steering wheel intact. Both engine and fuel tank bays are particularly well presented and rudder and prop in brass seemingly little used with less than 12 hours running time claimed since restoration recorded by photos.

Gratification can be almost instant, too, as this classic and historic speed boat - the French equivalent to an Italian Riva or an American Chris Craft with Caen-issued Carte de Circulation CN 238389 - comes with anchor and rope, pennant and mast plus water-ski pole, both demountable, ‘Dead-Man’s Cord’ for ignition kill, cover and braked two-wheeled trailer.
