Footnotes

  • With fixed head coachwork in hand-laid GRP by Monza, this MGA GT is believed to have been the prototype for a limited edition run that was never signed off for production. Having latterly shared a motor house with an ex-works rally MGA, this almost certainly unique and very well sorted coupe is only coming to market today, says the owner, through the demands on time and garage space following the recent and considerable enlargement of his collection.

Chassis and running gear are pure MGA as is the power unit, a 1600 Mk1 engine of 1588cc capacity, which, according to the vendor, has only done 400 miles since a full rebuild. We understand that the specification includes gas-flowed, polished and ported cylinder head, competition rocker gear, camshaft, distributor and new fuel pump, 13-row oil cooler, Maniflow exhaust, Weber 45 DCOE carburettor and FIA-type long-distance fuel tank in aluminium. The vendor also tells us that both gearbox, an MGA 1600 Mk1 unit, and differential were again rebuilt only 400 miles ago.

Rae Davis Racing have overhauled the front suspension, employing competition lever-arm shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar, fitted competition rear springs and up rated rear dampers, and serviced the brakes. Shod with new Dunlop CR65 L-section historic race tyres, steel wheels of 5.5ins width have recently been refurbished, too, and a spare set of rims are included. Driver safety is taken care of by a full FIA-type roll-over cage complete with door-bars, recent 5-point harness and hand-held fire extinguisher. The BRG-finished bodywork has only recently been refurbished.

Most recently RDR-prepped prior to a successful Goodwood circuit test session conducted by Rae Davis in March and then driven by Nick Cook to a 57.30mph race average in the wet at Brands Hatch during last month’s Masters Festival, the MG Monza is claimed to be on-the-button and Masters Top Hat event-regs compliant for the following disciplines - ‘Cloth Cap’ for Pre-1966 front-engine sports cars, ‘Oldies but Goldies’ for pre-1960 Touring and GT cars, and ‘Best of British’ including the ‘Spirit of MG’ Trophy. It could also be run in Equipe GTS and the MG Car Club’s MGA Register Championship. We are told that the V5 records first road registration in 30/03/1960 as well as the chassis number (an original MG Car Co plate being evident in the engine bay), while an MOT Test certificate, likely to have been freshly issued prior to the sale, should confirm 526 HHW’s street legal status.
