Footnotes

  • Like so many pioneer manufacturers the Belsize Motor & Engineering Co. Ltd. of Manchester can trace its ancestry back to bicycle manufacture, in this case by Marshall & Co. of that great industrial city. The first Marshall car appeared in 1897 but by 1901 cars were being manufactured under the Belsize banner. Early cars used proprietary engines and, although the company dallied with three-cylinder and six-cylinder models, it was really the later 10/12hp model which became the money-spinner for the Belsize operation. It was a conventional car in all respects, powered by a four-cylinder monobloc engine driving through a three-speed gearbox. Testimony to the success and durability of these cars is the comparatively high survival rate, no less than ten examples being listed with the V.C.C.

This charming two seater, originally bearing a County Durham registration number, bears a supplier’s plate from S H Harris & Sons of Haymarket Coach & Motor Body Works, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The car’s early history is not recorded however in the 1950’s it belonged to North-Eastern Veteran Car Club member, George Oliver, who would not take it to a veteran car rally unless it would first satisfactorily climb 1:4 Peth Bank in Lanchester where he lived. The car subsequently passed to another V.C.C. stalwart, Stanley Calder, before acquisition by the present family some 32 years ago. This highly original car was V.C.C. Dated in 1955 and has since participated actively in Club events including overseas tours. Attractively liveried in yellow and black, with black leather upholstery, the car is equipped with Belsize 104 oil side lamps and P&H acetylene headlamps and generator. Driving equipment includes a Stepney wheel, brass driving mirror, Stewart speedometer and a running-board-mounted petrol can. The registration number of this car, J 9672, is being retained by the vendor and a suitable age-related number will be advised at the time of the sale.
